Executive Leadership Internship

Internship Description

The Executive Leadership Intern will act as administrative support for the office, collaborating frequently with the Vice Presidents and management team. This internship is ideal for a mature student seeking a career in nonprofit leadership. The ideal candidate will have an affinity for fundraising and building great relationships. Interns can expect to gain an understanding of the daily realities of nonprofit administration, to attend and help prepare the executive team for at least one board meeting, to attend at least one development meeting with a gift officer, and to gain valuable leadership experience.

Primary Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities for this role include:

Administrative Duties
  • Support organizational priorities and CEO daily activities through use of project management software
  • Write, edit and read executive communications for clarity, brevity and effectiveness
  • Support the administrative needs of the CEO through answering phones, preparing mail, tracking actions in Raiser’s Edge, and researching prospects for giving capacity
  • Support events through RSVP tracking, speech scheduling, and prospect research
  • Assist in calendar maintenance; appointments, meetings, etc.
Research  & Communications
  • Assist in landscaping gaps of board talent on six regional boards and the chapter governing board in order to inform recruitment strategies
  • Help create support tools and strategies to increase board participation, including regular assessments and surveys. Help develop a Board Communications Strategy.   
  • Update current board materials to reflect changes in membership and credentials
  • Complete prospect profiles and wealth screening of board and donor prospects
  • Work closely with CEO & Vice Presidents to establish and streamline processes, with the goal of removing inefficiencies and breaking bottlenecks


Skills necessary for this role include:

  • Current or recent graduate student or highly qualified, mature undergraduate student
  • Ability to work at least 15-20 hours a week for a semester. (School credit is available.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including correct grammar and spelling and proper telephone etiquette. (Writing samples will be requested.)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word/Excel/Outlook).
  • Self-starter who can work efficiently with little oversight and ability to follow direction
  • Flexibility – ability to adapt to new projects at a moment’s notice and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to confidently interact with executive level staff, managers, and other interns
  • Raiser’s Edge database experience preferred
