My name is Ann MacDonald, and I am excited to share some information about a central Ohio running group that is very close to my heart. The group is called Love2Reach, or L2R for short. L2R is part of the non-profit Columbus Running Company Charity Fund. The goal of L2R is to train individuals to run or walk a half or full marathon while fundraising for our designated charity.
In just three years, the selfless members of L2R have raised over $60,000 for two local charities: The Ronald McDonald House of Central Ohio and Habitat for Humanity-Mid Ohio. This year, L2R is thrilled to be making the wishes of children in the Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana region come true through our partnership with Make-A-Wish.
I am especially excited about this partnership because in addition to being part of the L2R family, I am also the mother of a Wish Kid. In 2005, my son Parker, who was five years old at the time, was diagnosed with Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. Parker bravely endured 9 months of chemotherapy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and has remained cancer-free for 10 years.
When Parker was in treatment, the thing that entertained him most was playing with LEGO’s. So when his amazing wish volunteers came out to our home, it wasn’t surprising when Parker said his big wish would be to go to Legoland. The anticipation of the trip gave Parker and his siblings something positive to look forward to during a difficult time, and talking about his Wish trip was a great distraction while waiting for chemo, doctors, and scans.
The trip to Legoland was incredible and was so much more than we expected. Every detail was planned out. In addition to two fun-filled days at Legoland, we also got to enjoy the beautiful San Diego Zoo and Sea World. At the time, Parker’s future was uncertain and the chance to get away and enjoy family time free from worry was priceless.
Today Parker said, “Legoland meant a lot to me, not only because of the excitement and thrill of being a Lego-obsessed kid and getting to go to a literal land of Lego, but also because it helped to bring my family together into normalcy and relaxation after the chaotic months of cancer treatment.”
I am thrilled to be training to run a marathon and to raise funds through L2R. What a wonderful way to celebrate Parker’s good health by helping to assure that other families have the same opportunity ours did to create lifelong memories. If you would like to join this group of caring individuals while helping grant wishes, we would love to have you. You can sign up up HERE.
Thank you and best wishes,
