Abbie’s wish to design a high-fashion purse and have it displayed in the world’s fashion capital, Rodeo Drive, came true recently when she and her Mother, Karey, traveled to Los Angeles to the headquarters of bebe, Abbie’s favorite designer.
For fourteen-year-old Abbie, life is anything but easy. Her courageous battle against a life-threatening brain tumor required her to endure daily chemotherapy treatments and hospital visits. Abbie’s “passion for fashion” and interest in purse designs has kept her going as she battled the side effects of treatment. Abbie’s wish to design a high-fashion purse and have it displayed in the world’s fashion capital, Rodeo Drive, came true recently when she and her Mother, Karey, traveled to Los Angeles to the headquarters of bebe, Abbie’s favorite designer.
As a special surprise, bebe, an exclusive retailer of a distinctive line of contemporary women’s apparel and accessories, treated the ladies to a shopping spree the day before the wish. On wish day, they were whisked away by limousine to the company headquarters.
“Being in the L.A. bebe studio was amazing. It was cool to see the building where all the great designers create their designs,” wrote Abbie.
Upon their arrival, designers put Abbie to work. Sketch pad in hand, she poured through fashion magazines researching ideas and searching for inspiration. When she completed her sketch, she was taken into a design room filled with purses, fabrics and accessories. Several designers were on hand to answer her questions and discuss different options.
“My favorite part of the designing process was picking everything out. I could pick out any shape I wanted. It was also fun seeing all the steps that go into designing a purse,” added Abbie.
As she finalized the design, bebe staff surprised her with the news that the purse, later named “The Abigail Handbag,” would be sold on the Internet in addition to the storefront window in its Rodeo Drive store in Beverly Hills!
After lunch, Abbie and Karey were treated to a VIP behind-the-scenes tour of bebe’s headquarters. She also received several bebe gift bags throughout the day, including a very special gift from Manny Mashouf, the founder and owner of bebe. Abbie was escorted into Manny’s office so that he could meet this special young woman and review her design. He praised her for her creativity and gave her suggestions to enhance the design. Then he gave her a bebe Valentine’s Day purse filled with goodies and a pink teddy Bear.
“bebe really outdid themselves for Abbie’s special day. As we drove back to the hotel after the wish, Abbie and Karey expressed their genuine gratitude and were excited to see the finished piece! I’m so grateful this perfect wish experience was able to happen for such a wonderful girl,” wrote Abbie’s wish volunteer, Hailey Smith.
On July 29, the Kenwood Town Center bebe hosted a launch party in celebration of Abbie’s wish and of the official launch of her handbag. At the party, Abbie celebrated her recent birthday, shared her wish story and unveiled The Abigail Handbag. Abbie, along with 10 friends, enjoyed mini-makeovers, sparkling cider and miniature cupcakes.
