Wish kid Eddie, three, loves all things Disney, especially the movie “Cars” and the show “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.” Battling a life-threatening medical condition, Eddie’s life is far from easy, but watching Lightning McQueen or Mickey Mouse often helps lift his spirits and encourage him to keep fighting.
Eddie has been battling retinal cancer since he was just 13-months-old. When told he would receive a wish from Make-A-Wish®, Eddie said he'd like to meet his favorite Disney characters in person. Eddie wished to go to Walt Disney World® Resort.
The day his wish began, Eddie’s family helped him pack up his things in his Lightning McQueen suitcase before boarding a plane for their trip of a lifetime.
The fun began almost as soon as they touched down in Orlando. Eddie and his family made their way to their villa at Give Kids the World and discovered that there was going to be a Halloween celebration that night. Luckily, Eddie’s mom had come prepared, and Eddie spent the first night of his wish trick-or-treating in his firefighter costume.
The rest of the week was a dream come true for Eddie and his family. Eddie fed a dolphin at SeaWorld, high-fived Mickey Mouse and had milkshakes for dessert every night. He was also very excited to see some of his favorite movie characters - Lightning McQueen and Mater.
“Eddie is a huge “Cars” fan and seeing him stand with these guys just melted our hearts,” said Eddie’s mom Katie. “He loved them!”
As much as he loved meeting his Disney heroes, Eddie had the most fun spending time with his family. Whether they were playing mini-golf, riding rides or swimming at the GKTW pool, Eddie and his family never stopped smiling.
“He had the best time,” said Eddie’s mom. “He was so incredibly happy every day.”
Now back at home, Eddie is still basking in the excitement of his trip. When asked where he is from, he responds, “Give Kids the World,” and he sleeps with a stuffed whale he got from SeaWorld every night. Though the trip is over, the power of Eddie’s wish will never end; he and his family will be able to look back on the experience for years to come and be reminded of the hope, strength and joy of a wish come true.
“He loved every minute,” said Eddie’s mom. “What I love is that these memories are his forever.”
