Cody is your typical 13-year-old boy. He loves to watch sports and play video games and has dreamed of having his own special place to hang out and play with friends. When Cody was referred to Make-A-Wish®, he was so excited to hear he would get his dream game room, but what he didn’t know was that the excitement wouldn’t stop there…
Battling lymphoma, Cody escapes the world of doctors and treatments through games of all kinds, whether he’s watching or playing them. He loves to play games with his friends and is a huge basketball fan, especially for his home team, the Indiana Pacers.
Cody was diagnosed with Lymphoma in 2014. Cody’s mom, Tracy, explained just how difficult it has been. “It’s been a really, really long year. The first seven months was tough. He had chemo three times a week.” This has been a trying time for him and his family, but he does not let this battle break his fighting spirit.
When wish granters asked Cody what his one true wish would be, he told them he would like the “ultimate kid cave” – a gaming room in his basement. Of playing video games, Cody said, “It takes my mind away from everything.” Cody wished for a game room because it would be a long-lasting wish. He will be able to spend quality time at home with his friends and family, playing games together whenever they want.
Make-A-Wish transformed Cody’s basement into the ultimate game cave. The new game-focused basement included a popcorn machine, shuffle board table and a giant projector screen, but that was not all!
At his wish reveal, Cody also received a guest appearance from one of his favorite athletes, Myles Turner of the Indiana Pacers! Cody was enjoying his wish celebration when Turner came down the stairs and surprised him. Turner spent the afternoon hanging out with Cody and even brought him his very own signed basketball. Cody was blown away by his wish come true! “Make-A-Wish is amazing. They did so much more than I expected them to do. They just blew my mind.”
When Cody saw Turner in his brand new basement, he was completely surprised and brought to tears. Cody said, “Somebody from a professional basketball team is here to meet me directly is not what I expected at all.” Turner was also moved by the experience and said, “The expression on his face made me feel great.”
Cody and Turner spent the day together playing basketball and video games. They played FIFA, and Cody beat Turner! Turner provided the cherry on top of an awesome, once-in-a-lifetime wish experience.
While Cody will continue to receive chemotherapy treatment, his wish will allow him to take a break from the daily stress of battling lymphoma in his new game basement. Cody will be able to have fun, relax and hang out with his friends and family while playing video games, shuffle board and eating popcorn!
