Nine-year-old Grayson loves to constantly learn, explore and share knowledge with others. When wish granters from Make-A-Wish visited him and his family, they were impressed by his optimistic attitude, despite his battle with leukemia.
Grayson is interested in a variety of things, but he especially loves birds. He first learned about Puffins through his favorite movie, “Elf,” and from that point on was intrigued by the orange-beaked creatures. When the wish granters asked Grayson what his one true wish would be, he wished to go somewhere that he could see Puffins. After some research, his family picked Portland, Maine as their destination.
Grayson and his family had a wonderful time together on their wish trip. Grayson got to touch a live lobster, explore the beach and visit a few lighthouse museums. He also got to go on a Puffin-watching boat ride and finally came face to face with his favorite animal. He and his family watched the birds waddling, nesting, and catching fish on an egg island.
Grayson’s condition has greatly limited the types of activities he can do with his family, especially traveling. Through his wish experience, Grayson and his family were able to escape from their daily routine and create wonderful memories together.
“There were long periods of time leading up to the trip where Lynn and I split up time between the hospital and our home, and that weighed on all of us,” shared Grayson’s dad David. “This trip could not have been more perfect at bringing us back together. The worries and distractions of normal life were completely forgotten for the week we were there.”
Since the trip, Grayson has been doing amazingly well. He is back in school and is even playing travel soccer.
The power of a wish come true brought Grayson’s family closer together, filled them with joy and gave them strength to keep on fighting.
