SWIMMERS GO THE DISTANCE TO SEND 5-YEAR-OLD SANDUSKY & 3-YEAR-OLD TOLEDO
MAKE-A-WISH® KIDS TO WALT DISNEY WORLD® RESORT
This weekend’s two-day fundraiser helps grant wishes for local kids battling critical illnesses.
TOLEDO, Ohio (August 2018)
— On Sunday, August 5 Jeni Hammond and Cindra Mielke will dive into their 24th year of making wishes come true for wish kids as they swim from Starve Island to Portside Marina.
These long-time Make-A-Wish supporters will host their two-day annual fundraiser this weekend which includes a golf cart poker run and a long-distance swim to benefit wish kids battling critical illnesses in northwest Ohio. Over the years their long-distance swims in Lake Erie have ranged from 2 hours to 8 ½ hours. To date, Jeni and Cindra have raised over $700,000 to benefit Make-A-Wish! Last year, they raised just over $34,500 – the largest donation they’ve made so far.
The Make-A-Wish Kelleys Island Swim and Golf Cart Poker Run is a family-friendly celebration that starts on August 4 with the poker run and includes games, 50/50 raffles, baskets to bid on, and more. All monies collected go to granting wishes for local wish kids.
This year on swim day, Jeni and Cindra will have five-year-old Anna, battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and three-year-old Ella, battling Langerhans cell histiocytosis, cheering them on. Both Anna and Ella wish to visit Walt Disney World® Resort
and funds raised from the event will help make wishes like theirs come true. Additionally, wish kids currently waiting for their wish and those that have already experienced the power of a wish will be attending. Life Flight will do a fly over in honor of the wish kids in attendance.
The festivities begin this Saturday with the Golf Cart Poker Run. Participants travel by foot, golf cart, or bike to seven stops beginning at Dockers Waterfront Restaurant & Bar and concluding at the Kelleys Island Winery. Each location will have the opportunity to collect cards to win prizes. The cost is $10 per hand, with no limits on the quantity of hands played. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. at Dockers Restaurant.
On Sunday, August 5 at 11:30 a.m., the fun continues with the Kelleys Island Benefit Swim. Residents and guests are invited to welcome Jeni and Cindra as they come ashore where they will meet Anna and Ella. Everyone is invited to the post-swim party at Dockers Restaurant to celebrate.

Make-A-Wish relies on the financial support of the local community and organizations to grant wishes. Currently, only one out of every two eligible children gets their wish granted.

About Make-A-Wish® Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana
Make-A-Wish® creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. We are on a quest to bring every eligible child's wish to life, because a wish is an integral part of a child's treatment journey. Research shows children who have wishes granted can build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight a critical illness.
