Mother’s Day is a time to say thank you and today, we want to honor one of our amazing wish moms, Jennifer.
Jennifer is a proud mom to 12-year-old Stella and 9-year-old Crosby. When Crosby was just four, Jennifer and her husband got the devastating news that Crosby had leukemia. He spent the next four years of his young life in-and-out of the hospital. As a preschooler, he was forced to endure everything from never-ending chemotherapy and bone marrow biopsies to spinal taps and blood infusions. It was a challenging time for the entire family.
“It’s a long, grueling, emotionally exhaustive and expensive journey to try and save a child’s life. However, the hardest part of this interruption to normal childhood is the affect it has on peer relations and family dynamics. Crosby missed so much, including 215 days of school, and in the beginning, he couldn’t even see his sister. It was just too risky for her to visit the hospital during flu season. But you learn to adjust and excel at being a full-time momcologist’,” said Jennifer.
After going through some of the toughest seasons of her life, Jennifer said her family got to the other side; living a cancer free life. Then an unexpected letter showed up in her mailbox from Make-A-Wish OKI. Crosby was asked to choose his one true wish and soon after, the entire family was on their way to Walt Disney World® Resort.
“Ever so slowly, all that you’ve endured and witnessed fades to black. Becoming a wish family means that you get to redefine the narrative, enjoying the marrow of life with a child who is tether-free, wild and abandonly able to roam the Main Street of Disney without a care in the world. And for that we say thank you,” reflected Jennifer.
Jennifer’s story is a testament to the power of a wish for the entire family. Not only is Crosby brave and resilient, so is his mom, dad and sister. We couldn’t be more proud to call them part of our wish family.
To Jennifer and all of our wish moms, thank you for being a part of our family. We know your journey has been challenging, scary and unpredictable, but as always you are a beacon of hope and strength and a true inspiration to us all.
-Happy Mother’s Day from Make-A-Wish OKI!
