“She just got to be a kid for a week, and there is no bigger gift than that.”
When cancer stole wish kid Emma’s eyesight, some of the darkest days followed for Emma and her entire family. Emma’s wish to go to Walt Disney World® Resort signaled light at the end of the tunnel after a long journey battling cancer. Instead of navigating the floors of hospitals and clinics for check-ups, tests and treatments, Emma got to wander the streets of Disney, getting hugs from her favorite characters, making precious memories with her family. For Emma, her wish was so much more than just a vacation—it was life-changing.
“This experience made my daughter feel very special,” reflected Emma’s mom, Tina. “I look back on the pictures, and there is just pure joy on her face.”
Tina’s love and gratitude shines through in this letter we received after the wish. She details the power of the wish experience below:
"When our daughter, Emma, was diagnosed with retinoblastoma it was one of the most difficult situations we had ever encountered. When the disease took her eyes and caused her to go blind, we didn't know what to do. We were inundated with doctor's appointments, chemo, medical bills and flights from Indiana to New York in a fight to save Emma's life. It not only affected us as parents, but our other children as well.
When Emma's wish granters showed up, it was a completely different story. They immediately brought hope and joy into our home. At four-years-old, Emma decided it was her wish to go to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida to meet Queen Elsa. What a wonderful and magical trip it was!
Every second of the trip, from the moment we left home until the time we returned, was absolutely fabulous. My kids were able to go swimming, enjoy the Disney parks, and the best part of all-- Emma got Elsa all to herself! There was not one thought of cancer, or the worry that comes with it. My kids were happy and their smiles showed it, especially little Emma's.
We cannot thank you enough for this gift that has been given to our family! You have shown us happiness and hope in a situation where there once was none."
Emma’s experience exemplifies the power of a wish. During a wish, kids get to just be kids, parents are gifted a much-needed break from the stress of hospital stays, school and work, and families finally, “feel normal again.”
