Grayson enjoys being outside and watching the other kids play, which inspired his wish for something that would allow him to safely play with all the other children.
10-year-old Grayson was diagnosed at five months old with a brain malformation that causes brain abnormalities, severe developmental delays, and seizures causing him to be wheelchair-bound. When diagnosed, Grayson was given a life expectancy of only 2 to 5 years, so reaching his 10th birthday was a celebrated milestone.
In trying to decide his heartfelt wish, Grayson’s mother expressed his love to be outdoors and to go to the park. She shared that he becomes more expressive when they spend time outside but unfortunately, Grayson’s local park didn’t have ADA equipment. Grayson just enjoyed being outside and watching the other kids play, which inspired his wish for something that would allow him to safely play with all the other children.
On the day of Grayson’s wish, the community surrounded him with love as his family cut the ribbon to signify the grand opening of the exciting new playground equipment. Make-A-Wish staff worked with local partners to install the inclusion wheel at his local park. Grayson’s new playground equipment is a merry-go-round that can spin children in wheelchairs and able-bodied children at the same time.
When Grayson’s family put him on the inclusion wheel, his friends join in to play and spun themselves around. And furthermore, kids who just happened to be at the park that day come over to join in on the fun. In that moment, Grayson’s heartfelt wish came true.
Carol, Grayson’s mother, expressed, “It’s great that this will open doors for other kids.”
Thanks to Grayson’s wish, children of all abilities for years to come will be able to play and celebrate life together.
