Six-year-old Joshua is an adventurous little boy with an imagination as big as the high seas.
Battling leukemia, Joshua has learned to use make-believe as a happy distraction from constant doctor’s appointments and procedures. When times get hard, Joshua simply channels the characters from his favorite television show, “Jake and the Never Land Pirates,” and sets off on a pirate voyage of his own.
When wish granters met with Joshua, he wished for something that every pirate needs – a pirate ship! To ensure that Joshua could set off for distant lands and search for buried treasure every day, Make-A-Wish®, with the help of All Around Landscaping, built a pirate ship playhouse perfect for Joshua’s own backyard.
On his wish day, Joshua’s pirate ship playset, complete with portholes, a bridge and a rock wall, was delivered to his house by volunteers from All Around Landscaping. Joshua’s eyes lit up as he turned the vessel’s yellow steering wheel. With a pirate hat, a sword and a few missing teeth, Joshua looked like a real buccaneer captain.
All hands were on deck as Joshua, his friends, family, wish granters and volunteers celebrated his wish come true with a pirate-themed party. Joshua’s smile was a mile wide as he enjoyed delicious snacks and explored his brand-new ship.
“The party is great,” Joshua’s father Tom told Meaghan Downs, a reporter at The Anderson News. “The best thing is seeing a smile on a kid’s face.”
Joshua’s mother was equally thrilled with the outcome of her son’s wish and excited about his future, telling The Anderson News, “He plays like any other kid now. Now he can do anything he wants.”
With an authentic pirate ship, an active imagination, and the courage of a true buccaneer, there is nothing but open seas and endless possibilities in front of Joshua.
